Rothko String Quartet

Isabel Pfefferkorn Mezzo-soprano

Between biblical references and pragmatic questions of the present the Rothko String Quartet together with Isabel Pfefferkorn searches for the real core of funeral music. For in addition to the God-fearing mourning that was the focus of the pompous requiems of the time, the bereaved are also concerned about consolation, regaining vitality, and celebrating life. The musicians open up this spectrum with a juxtaposition of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem in a rarely performed quartet movement and selected works by contemporary, exclusively female composers who lend funeral music a comforting lightness. Between pop and classical the evening will offer new listening perspectives that will explore the essence of funeral music from then to now.
