The Wooster Group is a significant pioneer in the innovative theatre, dance and media scene. Founded in 1975 on Wooster Street in Manhattan, the company now tours nationally and internationally to theatres worldwide. Since its inception, the group has been a full-time ensemble led by Elizabeth LeCompte with an ever-evolving core of members and many artistic partners. The expansion of contemporary theatre to include sound, film and video and the radical reinterpretation of classical texts finds dynamic expression in their highly innovative work. The Wooster Group has received numerous awards, including multiple National Endowment for the Arts awards, nine Village Voice OBIE Awards, and six Bessie Awards.
