The classical symphony orchestra was complete when the saxophone was invented in 1841. Establishing the instrument as a permanent orchestra component could have been more successful. Still, it was initially used as a substitute for the violin at open-air concerts due to the intensity and warmth of its sound. The SIGNUM saxophone quartet, among others, is now taking up the challenge of providing the saxophone with a little bit of missed classical music history. The ensemble is particularly passionate about its arrangements of classical works, which prove that the »air violin« has become an integral part of the classical repertoire.
